Silk

About Island Yarns

Pictured here are some hand spun and dyed silk which has become my passion. When I am not doing production spinning, I am spinning silk and stockpiling it for dye baths. I try to do large silk dye baths twice a year in the spring and fall. I utilize all the dye bath doing exhaust baths that let you keep a color range with the same hue. Dying in the spring and fall lets me take advantage of the plants on the island that I know to be light fast. Watching native dyers in Mexico has taught me the wonderful range of colors from cochineal. So the dying is done with both natural and commercial materials. I spin my silk a bit finer than the wool but it is bulkier than most silks and has a lot of texture. The silk is sold in small skeins and can be used for scarves, accent in a project or making a whole garment.
